Acupuncture
Our treatments rooms are infection prevention and control certified by our local council. I gained my diploma with the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists and stay up to date with advances in acupuncture treatment. Single use sterile needles are used for all treatments I provide.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine and now also commonly used in Western medicine for pain and symptom relief and resolve. Acupuncture is believed to relieve pain by diverting or changing the painful sensations that are sent to your brain via nerve pathways from damaged/sensitised tissues and by stimulating your body’s own pain-relieving hormones (endorphins and encephalins). This pain relief may only last a short time when you begin treatment, but repeated treatment (usually weekly for six or eight sessions) can bring long-term benefit, often for several months or longer.
What does acupuncture involve?
Acupuncture treatment involves inserting fine sterile single use needles into the skin and muscles of the body at specific locations known as acupuncture points or acupoints. Sometimes you will feel a sensation of heaviness, tingling or twitching around the needled area which is considered a good sign. Acupuncture is rarely painful.
Common conditions treated with acupuncture include but are not limited to:
· Back pain and neck pain
· Chronic pain
· Nerve pain such as sciatica, radiating arm pain etc.
· Joint pain
· Knee Osteoarthritis
· Tendon injuries such as tennis elbow, Achilles tendinopathy etc.
· Headaches and migraines
· Insomnia
· Fibromyalgia pain and sensitivity
There are some instances when acupuncture cannot be used and this will be clarified in the initial consultation.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The frequency and number of treatments differ from person to person. Some people experience dramatic relief in the first treatment. For complex or long-standing chronic conditions more treatments may be required. An individualised treatment plan that includes the expected number of treatments will be discussed during your initial visit.
